Michael Morpurgo's "Kaspar, Prince of Cats" was our book for the month of March. On the whole it was well received and given and average rating of 7.5 mice out of 10. Johnny Trott first meets Kaspar at the London Savoy Hotel. He is the Prince of Cats owned by Countess Kandinsky. Johnny looks after Kaspar and continues to when tragedy strikes. The Stanton family, visiting from America, stay at the Savoy when their daughter Lizziebeth who befriends Kaspar and Johnny. Johnny saves Lizziebeth from sure death and heads to America aboard the Titanic along with Kaspar. Read Kaspar, Prince of Cats to see if Kaspar really has nine lives!
Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl was well received by our Junior Book Club. Once again, Mr. Dahl has woven a fantastic story. There are three farmers who are enraged by the theft of their livestock and crops. They join together to put a stop to the stealing and to put an end to Mr. Fox! Read this book to find out who the sly one really is...the Junior Book Club gave this book 8 fox tails out of ten!
The Junior Book Club met on Monday, February 25. Over the holiday season we read individually picked books. Due to holiday commitments such as visitors or travel, we chose books that fit our individual schedules.
Movie for Dogs by Lois Duncan, the third and final book in this series, was reviewed December 17. Over the past few years, we as a group, have read Hotel for Dogs and News for Dogs. It was fun to complete the series feeling like we really knew the characters. The last book seemed more focused on the people but introduced us to some new doggie friends. The group as a whole gave the book 8 bones out of ten!
Ida B. by Katherine Hannigan was the book for the month of October. Some of our readers felt that they could not identify with the whimsical Ida B. who talked to trees and brooks. Ida B. has been home schooled for the past 4 years and now must return to school as her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. Ida B. reminds us that we have very little control in our own lives and must make choices dealing with our feelings and how we treat others. Most of the readers enjoyed this book.
Our first book this year was "The Bad Beginnings" by Lemony Snicket, the first in a series of unfortunate events. There was a mixed review at our monthly meeting. Some people found the events horrid but were unable to put the book down hoping that the Baudelaire orphans would finally catch a break. Other members enjoyed the resourcefulness shown by the three young siblings. The one thing we did agree on was how cookies and blue juice seem to add a little colour to our discussion.
